Traditional British inn in Swindon

The restaurant "The Sally Pussey's Inn" in Swindon, England, is a traditional pub that stands out for its blend of British coziness, modern hospitality, and rich history. Located near Royal Wootton Bassett, just outside the city center of Swindon, it is a popular meeting place for both locals and travelers seeking a break from the nearby motorway. The inn, which is affectionately named after the historic landlady Sarah Purse—known locally as "Sally Pussey"—combines a long tradition with contemporary comfort and culinary enjoyment.

Best Sunday Carvery in the region

The history of "Sally Pussey's Inn" dates back to the 19th century when it was run by the Purse family under the name "The Wheatsheaf." Later, in 1906, it was taken over by Arkell's Brewery and renamed in the 1970s in honor of the former landlady. Since then, the building has been expanded and renovated multiple times, most recently in 2020, with a strong emphasis on preserving its original charm, such as the historic fireplaces. Today, the restaurant is operated by the Relish Group, an experienced local company known for high-quality gastronomy.

Dog-friendly restaurant with beer garden

Culinarily, "Sally Pussey's Inn" focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and offers a wide range of dishes that include both traditional British cuisine and modern fare. The Sunday Carvery is particularly praised—a sumptuous Sunday meal featuring juicy roasts, crispy potatoes, and plenty of vegetables, regarded as one of the best in the region. Also popular are the homemade "Pussey’s Pizzas," baked in a stone oven and known for their generous size and intense flavor. For burger lovers, there’s the "Sally’s Shack Burger," made with regional grass-fed beef that stands out for its juicy quality. Vegetarian and vegan guests are also considered, as well as children, for whom there is a special menu.

Locally sourced ingredients and dishes

The ambiance of the restaurant is inviting and diverse: Inside, you will find a combination of rustic elements like exposed brick walls and modern furnishings, while outside, a large beer garden beckons—one of the largest in the area. This space not only accommodates relaxed outdoor dining but also features heated pavilions that ensure coziness year-round. The inn is also dog-friendly, making it especially attractive for families and pet lovers. In addition to the regular restaurant operation, there are private rooms like "The Gable" and "The Nook," available for hire for celebrations, conferences, or special occasions.

Elegant private rooms for events

"Sally Pussey's Inn" excels not only in its food but also in its service. Staff members are often praised for their friendliness and efficiency, particularly during busy times such as large gatherings or bustling Sundays. Additionally, the restaurant offers a delivery service and the option to order takeout, making it flexible and customer-oriented even during challenging times like the pandemic. The beverage menu complements the offerings with a selection of local beers, cocktails, and wines that underline the traditional pub character.

We popped in on the way back from London, first words 'have you booked?' No hello or how are you as you expect from a 4-5 star rated establishment. 'Well you'll have to be gone by 6pm' and proceeded to walk off in the direction of the tables, pointed to one and walked off. We waited while staff stood about by the bar chatting noone asked if we wanted a drink I had to catch the attention of a staff member walking by. The food came, I appreciate I was on my way back from the toilet but as I started my meal my son said his chips were cold, hubby said same here and so were mine. The burger, fish and my scampi were piping hot! So how can half the meal be stone cold. I asked for more hot chips and was provided with one bowl between three of us. No apology and she went back to chatting at the bar. MORE SRAFF TRAINING NEEDED

Had Sunday, Carvery was very disappointed with it. Roast potatoes and parsnips were hard. Cauliflower cheese burnt. Food temperature tepid. Others in my party had choices from the menu and were very happy.

Firstly we were so excited to come back to this place however will never return. We ordered a round of drinks to start which the lady forgot one of them so asked again waited 10 minutes and then had to asked again and she said sorry will get that now. Then we ordered food which to say the least was disgraceful the double trouble burger we ordered was burnt and dry with cold soggy chips the spicy pizza we ordered was warm when it got to the table and the pint my partner ordered was complete flat. We left half the burger and half the pizza when they waitress came over and asked was everything ok we explained what was wrong she said oh ok and walked off. And she didn’t come back to the table after about 15 minutes I went to the bar and asked to speak to someone a lady asked me to explain she said no worries I’ll speak to someone she then came to our table and said you can have 30% off we explained we didn’t want 30% we just didn’t want to pay for food that wasn’t eaten or the drink that wasn’t drunk. She said she would be back in a mo. We could see her talking about us to the member of staff that said oh ok and she then lied and said she didn’t say that and that food was ok this was a lie and then turned to look at our table and turned her nose up and shook her head but this is when 4 members of staff came over including the front of house manager who is the most awful front of house manager I have ever met telling us I thought your plates were clean we never get complaints so your wrong and she was going to check the cctv to see exactly what we have eaten we said ok you are welcome to do that. She then came flying back out of the kitchen after realising she was wrong screamed at us in front of the whole restaurant causing a scene telling us to get out and that we would never be welcome again I have never been so disappointed and embarrassed in my whole life

I arrived without a reservation for 5 and the team, welcomed us, and put them themselves out to accommodate us, and found us a table. Carvery was wonderful, first time visiting and would certainly go again.

Met up with a large family group and arranged to reserve The Nook with good disabled access for my mum’s wheelchair .From the beginning of our planning , staff were so helpful and couldn’t do enough for us . We prebooked our meals for a set time but staff were so kind checking that we were still on time and holding back the meals when some people were delayed . The service was outstanding and the food was very good in terms of value , quality and portion size . Our waitress Jess was outstanding . The whole experience was excellent. Thank you so much will definitely be back and thoroughly recommend.

Really disappointed tonight went for valentines meal I ordered the Sally's signature burger cutting into it was pink and tasted weird. I got it changed the next one was cremated and had a bright pink part in it, Obviously didn’t pay for this and we never bothered with desserts.Shame seems to have gone downhill and probably won’t return.

We frequently dine here for family meals. There are usually 9 of us and the service is always friendly and efficient. I’ve never had a bad meal here and there’s always something on the menu that I like. Look forward to my next visit
